American Heart Association Month
February is American Heart Month, an annual time dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular diseases– the nation’s No. 1 killer (Source: American Heart Association, www.americanheart.org.  Better lifestyle habits can greatly decrease your risk of heart disease:  Eat a nutritious diet.  Remember – heart disease isn’t just a man’s disease!  Heart disease is #1 killer of women in America.  Be physically active. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity – 60 is ideal for weight maintenance or loss.  Don’t smoke – and if you do, it’s never too late to quit!  Within 20 minutes of quitting, your body begins a series of positive changes that continue for years.  

 RECIPE OF THE MONTH:  Baked Apples
4 apples, washed and cored
˝ cup dried raisins
Freshly grated lemon rind
1/8 of a teaspoon of vanilla
4 cinnamon sticks
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup lemon or orange juice
 
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Stuff the cored apple with grated lemon rind,
raisins, 1 cinnamon stick, vanilla, 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1/8 teaspoon
of cinnamon.  Place apples in oven proof pan.  Drizzle apples with lemon juice
and scatter remainder of raisins around them.  Bake covered at 350 degrees
for approx. 45 - 50 minutes. Enjoy!
 
Ways to  Be Healthier
FOOD PREPARATION BASICS:
1. 
Avoid high-risk foods like raw eggs, undercooked meats and unpasteurized milk products.
2. 
Use different cutting boards for fruits and vegetables and  meats and poultry.
3. 
Shop with care.  Only buy foods before the “sell by” dates.  Never buy damaged or bulging cans or jars, don’t buy produce that looks damaged.
4. 
Keep clean—wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with warm water and soap before and after touching food.
5. 
Keep foods at the right temperature.  Keep your refrigerator at 40  degrees Fahrenheit or below.  
6. 
Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator or in cold water.
