Hospice has a long and rich history. Dame Cicely Saunders visited Yale University in 1963. Her lecture, based on her work in England with establishing a hospice, excited the medical community. The Dean of Nursing at Yale, Florence Wald, invited Dame Saunders to be a visiting faculty member. In 1968 Florence Wald took a sabbatical and traveled to England to learn all she could about hospice. In 1972 Elizabeth Kübler-Ross testified at national hearings on the topic of death with dignity. The hearings were conducted by the US Senate Special Committee on Aging. Kübler-Ross stated at that meeting:
In 1974 the first hospice in the US, The Connecticut Hospice, opened its doors. The rest is history. The belief of hospice is that everyone has the right to die pain free and with dignity.
